The IRS approved Musk’s funding application in March
Elon Musk plans to launch a STEM-focused primary and secondary school and a new university in Austin and has allocated $100 million to the effort.
The tech billionaire and owner of X filed an application with the Internal Revenue Service to establish an elementary and high school dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and, ultimately, a university in the Texas capital, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
The IRS application, obtained by Bloomberg, was filed in October 2022 and approved in March.
The application states that Musk’s new “[f]oundation…is in the process of creating an independent primary and secondary school,” and “The School intends ultimately to expand its operations to create a university dedicated to education at the highest levels.”
“If a student is admitted to the School, tuition and financial support will be provided to the extent of available resources,” according to the application.
The School will instruct students in person and is searching for an executive director, teachers, and administrators.
It will boast a traditional curriculum “alongside hands-on learning experience including simulations, case studies, fabrication/design projects and labs,” according to the application.
The university will pursue accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Musk moved to Texas in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, he told CNBC at the time.
Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area have an “outsized influence in the world,” he told the news outlet.
Musk’s efforts to promote academic freedom recently drew ire from a Columbia University journalism fellow, The College Fix reported at the time.
In November, Anika Navaroli, who had worked at Twitter before her appointment as a senior fellow at Columbia’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism, wrote Nov. 2 in The Hill that Musk’s support for free speech on X is both “immoral” and “dangerous.”
