“Fighting Sioux” Team Wears Blank Uniforms Due to NCAA Ban

The University of North Dakota hockey team ordered new uniforms–ones that don’t bear the school logo, “The Fighting Sioux.” That’s because the NCAA considers the nickname offensive to Native American tribes, and has forbid its use. The ban even extends to the use of UND’s hockey arena:

The school also is barred from hosting postseason tournaments even though college hockey’s Taj Mahal, the $100 million Ralph Engelstad Arena, would be an ideal place for an NCAA regional. The arena has at least 3,000 Fighting Sioux logos in the building, including a 10-foot sketch of the logo embedded in the granite lobby floor.

The irony in all of this? The Sioux tribe has permitted UND to use the nickname, and considers it a source of pride.
